The Family That Didn’t Take Vitamins

I admit it — we just weren’t a vitamin family.

Other than a prenatal while I was pregnant, I just couldn’t get into taking a big pill each morning. Or those little red iron tablets. Or, well, just about anything that wasn’t a pill for my Sneezy-McSneezerson environmental allergies.

As a kid, I ate prehistoric cartoon character-shaped vitamins — you know the ones — because they tasted like candy, but apparently they contain aspartame, GMOs and a whack of synthetic dyes. Whoops.

Our son has issues with food dyes, so there was no way I was going down that yabba-dabba path. I was intrigued by Tiffany’s review of SmartyPants Vitamins because they’re free of artificial colors (as well as yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, gluten, salt, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup, and salicylates). I agreed to review a bottle of the Kids Complete Multi + Omega 3 + Vitamin D, which in vitamin-speak is a full multivitamin with Omega 3S EPA & DHA with Vitamin D3 and Vitamin B12.

When they arrived in the mail, I showed the label to my healthy vitamin-savvy friend, and she was like “Wow! They have fish oil in them?!” Apparently she forces her kids to eat bland vitamins daily but they’ll only tolerate one pill, so they usually have to skip the fish oil tablet. I think I just blinked and tried to squash the guilty feelings about never giving my kids ANY vitamins before.

My son and daughter (age five and three) were skeptical when I announced I had special vitamins for them to take every morning. But when I cracked open the bottle and shook four vitamins into each little hand, they squealed with glee. Gummies! Mommy was giving them GUMMY CANDY! In the morning! Before breakfast! They couldn’t believe their good luck.

Honestly, when you look at a SmartyPants Vitamin, it is VERY hard to believe they’re good for you. They look like chewy little gumdrops coated in sugar, and they taste as good as they look. Our daughter loves them so much that she tries to con multiple servings a day by pretending she hasn’t had her vitamins yet. I’ve already ordered a bottle of the Adult Complete + Fiber + Multi + Vitamin D for me and my husband.

Actually, I should order a second bottle because my candy-lovin’ father-in-law was popping the kids’ vitamins like gummy bears over the weekend. LEAVE SOME FOR THE KIDS, DUDE.

Disclosure: SmartyPants Vitamins generously sent me a bottle for my family to use and for me to review. All opinions are my own!
