Financial Peace During the Holidays

By -

For the first few years of our marriage, the holidays seemed to sneak up on my husband and I like a bandit in the night. One minute we’d be enjoying our summers, lazily getting browned up on the beach, and the next minute we’d be looking at a skeletal bank account, a Christmas list a mile long, and a long list of family members asking us for our travel itineraries.

It got worse when we had our son, since everyone who’s ever been even sort of related to me feels entitled to get some quality Levi-time around the holidays. After he came into the picture I would find myself terrified that these obligations would sneakily sideswipe our bank account and leave us helplessly tethered to rice and beans until we got our tax returns.

Basically, between traveling all over the north-east visiting relatives, buying presents, and trying to pay all of our bills, there may have been “Peace on Earth” but there certainly wasn’t peace in my house.

Financial Peace During the Holidays

After several years of going through all this nonsense (and giving myself shin-splints since I quickly doubled the miles I was running. Didn’t you know that’s the best way to clear your head?) I finally decided to take control of something.

While my husband and I can’t do much to change the reality of demanding relatives and ever-extending Christmas lists, we do have the power to encourage financial peace in our house during the holidays. One thing we’ve started doing is, starting in January, putting away a little bit of money from each paycheck so that when November rolls around, we have a nice little stash of cash saved up and we can just swipe our debit cards without batting an eyelash. Another thing we do is take advantage of any and all online deals we can find to cash in on savings but avoid losing our minds or our limbs in crazy Black Friday brawls. November is barely over and we’ve already gotten most of our shopping done. And with money that we’d already saved up. Take that, shin-splints!

One super sweet online deal helping encourage financial peace is Capital One 360’s Black Friday Sale. They are giving away hundreds of dollars in new account bonuses, referral bonuses, and closing cost credits (especially if a new home is on your Christmas list) to those of us looking to find sneaky ways to not run a bajillion miles to try to stress less over holiday spending.

Only one thing – you’ve gotta be quick to take advantage of these deals! They end at 11:59PM Eastern Time on December 1st. So, stop stressing and get some free cash and a head start to financial peace! Click here to see all the deals!
